Why are employment background checks necessary in India?

  • Lately some studies have found out that candidates fake their employment history with the intention of better jobs or higher salaries or better designations.  Primarily they do it because they want to make money quickly and easily than their peers. Another reason why these activities are prevalent in India is that they know that the system will allow them to get away with it. The trend has particularly got very high in the IT and the banking industry in India.
Hence employment verification in India becomes important in order to validate whether a candidate has been working for quite some time in a particular role with salary in on the resume. The primary process involves communicating with the Human Resources or the Payroll department of the previous employers of a prospective candidate and determine accurately the truthfulness of a candidate’s work history.
Following are the things that can be determined with a pre employment background check
    • Finding out any falsified dates the candidate has mentioned like employment date, any period of unemployment, deliberate extension of employment period with any specific employer.
    • Determine any cover up periods of imprisonment or criminal history.
    • Truthfulness of designations, salaries, and responsibilities mentioned in the resume.
    • If the reasons for quitting the earlier job is deliberate or manipulated or due to low performance.
    • Truthfulness behind the varied array of the experience mentioned in the resume

What is the process of Employment Verification in India?

The preferred method of employment verification in India is to verify the entire employment history. associated experience letters and salary slips of each employer is also reviewed as a part of the process. As a part of this process the earlier or the existing employer will receive verification from the verification directly from the HR department or from third party verification agency. Communication and information is expected from every point of contact on aspects like
    • Duration of the past mentioned employments
    • Designation worked in past
    • Salary withdrawn from the mentioned employments
    • Details of the Reporting manager
    • Records of Performance and professionalism
    • Actual reasons for leaving the past employment
    • Probabilities of rehiring in the past companies
    • Any performance issues encountered in past job experiences
However, it should always be remembered that employment verification with the past employer should never be performed without taking consent, of the prospective candidate for it might create a negative impact on the career of the concerned person.
